Conjunctiva
Conjuntivitis Medicamentosa/Dermatoconjunctivitis Medicamentosa
Differential diagnosis
- Contact lens related staining or oedema
- Corneal erosion
- Corneal abrasion
- Corneal ulcer
- Corneal endothelial dysfunction
- Rosacea
- Viral keratoconjunctivitis
- Dry eye
- Exposure keratitis
Possible management by Optometrist
Treatment
- Where possible, withdraw offending medication or preservative
- Refer to original PoM prescriber for consideration of alternative medication
- Cold compress
- Unpreserved tear supplements/ocular lubricants for symptomatic relief
- PoM If severe, and in consultation with original prescriber, consider a short course of topical steroid
- Prednisolone 0.5% 4x daily (reduce by 1 drop a week to zero)
- or Fluorometholone 0.1% eye drops 4x daily (reduce by 1 drop a week to zero)
Advice
- Advise patient to avoid future use of causative drug or preservative
Management Category
- Normally no referral, but always inform and be advised by the original prescriber
