Differential diagnosis

• Contact lens related staining or oedema
• Corneal erosion
• Corneal abrasion
• Corneal ulcer
• Corneal endothelial dysfunction
• Rosacea
• Viral keratoconjunctivitis
• Dry eye
• Exposure keratitis

Possible management by Optometrist

Treatment

• Where possible, withdraw offending medication or preservative
• Refer to original PoM prescriber for consideration of alternative medication
• Cold compress
• Unpreserved tear supplements/ocular lubricants for symptomatic relief
• PoM If severe, and in consultation with original prescriber, consider a short course of topical steroid
  • Prednisolone 0.5% 4x daily (reduce by 1 drop a week to zero)
  • or Fluorometholone 0.1% eye drops 4x daily (reduce by 1 drop a week to zero)

Advice

• Advise patient to avoid future use of causative drug or preservative

Management Category

• Normally no referral, but always inform and be advised by the original prescriber
