Ocular Motility

Differential Diagnosis

  • Monocular or Binocular
  • Recent onset or Longstanding
  • Constant or Intermittent
  • Neurogenic, Myogenic or Mechanical aetiology

 Possible Management by Optometrist

Treatment

  • Chronic cases only
    • Correction of refractive
    • Incorporation of prisms

Advice

  • Refer to Orthoptist and Hospital Eye Service
    • if acute diplopia,
    • or if symptoms persist longer than 3 months, in treatment of chronic cases

Management Category

  • Early referral indicated for acute diplopia

Possible Management by Ophthalmologist

  • Identification of underlying pathology, and referral onwards, as appropriate
  • Medication
  • Surgery
  • Botox Injections

Possible Management by Orthoptist

  • Alleviation of diplopia by various techniques including
    • Prism therapy,
    • Occlusion
    • Use of compensatory head posture
    • Orthoptic exercises
