- Monocular or Binocular
- Recent onset or Longstanding
- Constant or Intermittent
- Neurogenic, Myogenic or Mechanical aetiology
Possible Management by Optometrist
Treatment
- Chronic cases only
- Correction of refractive
- Incorporation of prisms
Advice
- Refer to Orthoptist and Hospital Eye Service
- if acute diplopia,
- or if symptoms persist longer than 3 months, in treatment of chronic cases

- Early referral indicated for acute diplopia

- Identification of underlying pathology, and referral onwards, as appropriate

- Alleviation of diplopia by various techniques including
- Prism therapy,
- Occlusion
- Use of compensatory head posture
- Orthoptic exercises
