Glaucoma

Glaucoma, Steroid Induced

Differential diagnosis

  • Ocular hypertension
  • Secondary glaucoma
  • Primary open angle glaucoma

Possible management by Optometrist

Treatment

  • Discuss with the prescribing clinician the possibility of discontinuing steroid therapy
    • PoM If not possible, patient may need topical anti-glaucoma treatment (discuss with treating clinician)

Advice

  • Acute response may resolve within a few days of cessation of steroid therapy
  • Chronic steroid response usually resolves in 1-4 weeks

Management Category

  • Refer to ophthalmology

Possible management by Ophthalmologist

  • Alternative therapy less likely to cause raised intra-ocular pressure
  • Anti-glaucoma management whilst still on topical steroids
  • Prolonged medical therapy or surgical intervention, including laser if pressure does not fall on reducing steroids
