Glaucoma
Glaucoma, Steroid Induced
Differential diagnosis
- Ocular hypertension
- Secondary glaucoma
- Primary open angle glaucoma
Possible management by Optometrist
Treatment
- Discuss with the prescribing clinician the possibility of discontinuing steroid therapy
- PoM If not possible, patient may need topical anti-glaucoma treatment (discuss with treating clinician)
Advice
- Acute response may resolve within a few days of cessation of steroid therapy
- Chronic steroid response usually resolves in 1-4 weeks
Management Category
- Refer to ophthalmology
Possible management by Ophthalmologist
- Alternative therapy less likely to cause raised intra-ocular pressure
- Anti-glaucoma management whilst still on topical steroids
- Prolonged medical therapy or surgical intervention, including laser if pressure does not fall on reducing steroids
