Melanoma, Choroidal

Differential Diagnosis

  • Choroidal naevus
  • Congenital hypertrophy of retinal pigment epithelium (CHRPE)
  • Subretinal or suprachoroidal haemorrhage
  • Choroidal haemangioma
  • Prominent vortex vein ampulla

Possible management by Optometrist

Treatment

  • None

Advice

  • Refer pigmented choroidal lesions to ophthalmology if
    • margin within 3mm of the optic disc
    • raised
    • presence of overlying orange pigment lipofuscin
    • sub-retinal fluid
    • sub-retinal haemorrhage

Management Category

  • Urgent referral to ophthalmology
  • vWhenever possible include an image of the lesion centred in the middle of the image

  • Imaging
  • Ultrasound
  • Referral to tertiary centre for opinion
