Optic Nerve

Visual Field Defect, Unilateral, Isolated

Differential diagnosis

  • Poor patient performance at automated perimetry
  • Ptosis
  • Functional visual loss
  • Photoreceptor disorder

Possible management by Optometrist

Treatment

  • None

Advice

  • In the absence of glaucomatous disc changes, abnormal colour vision or a relative afferent pupillary defect, then poor patient performance of automated perimetry most likely explanation, even if false negative and positive rates low
  • Repeat automated perimetry with direct supervision, and lid taping as necessary, to see if improves with practice
  • Referral to ophthalmology if progressive or symptomatic
